Integrated Timeline of Emergence
A layered map of when reality becomes capable of expressing new patterns, paired with the disciplines that study each layer.
Reminder:
- All dates are approximate and mark first known emergence, not completion or correctness.
- Disciplines always emerge after the layer they study already exists.
- Each discipline name is a clickable markdown page — when expanded, it would show the internal timeline of that discipline's own evolution (key thinkers, shifts, debates).
- This timeline is descriptive, not moral or teleological, and not a claim about consciousness increasing or freedom expanding — it's an ordering of when things existed and when people started formally studying them.
Core Rule
Claim: Each layer's emergence date is the earliest currently-evidenced instance of that phenomenon, dated according to the standards of the discipline that studies it. Each layer boundary corresponds to a transition that is independently recognized as significant within that discipline's own literature — not a boundary chosen to make the overall narrative flow.
This is falsified, layer by layer, if:
- New dated evidence moves a layer's emergence earlier or later than stated here — the date is wrong and must be corrected to match current evidence.
- A layer's boundary does not correspond to any transition recognized as significant in the relevant field's own literature (i.e., I invented the cutoff to make the story work, rather than borrowing a cutoff the field already treats as real) — that layer should be merged, split, or removed.
- The "related disciplines" listed for a layer did not, in fact, form to study that layer — the mapping is wrong and should be corrected.
Any layer entry below that fails one of these tests should be flagged and fixed, not defended.
